Dima’s work first caught my eye on a poster for the Heart of Darkness comedy show at Union Hall in Brooklyn almost two years ago. I asked the host Greg Barris who made the art for it, and he said it’s his friend Dima’s. Years later while attending an opening at the Cotton Candy Machine art gallery, I stumbled upon some familiar looking art. I ask the man next to me who made all those awesome paintings. Sure enough he says, “Oh, thats Dima.”
We asked Dima why he chooses art. He shares:
I choose art because I get to live in my own world. I’ve always been a person who lives in his head. Art was always great for me because it’s something that could focus me. I wasn’t a good student in school. A classic C average person, but in art I always excelled. I feel like I got a lot of positive reinforcement from everyone around me that didn’t make me feel like such a failure in school. I knew I was good at something, and it was always something I enjoyed doing. I loved getting lost in drawing so I always kept with it. I realized fairly early on that it’s something that I will always be doing, because it’s just who I am.
What do you love about art?
What I love about it is that I get to interpret my experiences and look back at them through the images I created. I always see making art as a conversation with yourself with your own language that only you speak fluently. It’s my form of meditation. It helps me be a more creative thinker in other aspects of life. It has shaped my whole world. I have complete freedom to do whatever I want. I can go as weird as I feel. I can create good guys, bad guys, or bad guys that are secretly good. Things don’t have to make sense. They don’t have to mean anything, they can mean everything! I can plan things out, or I can just wing it and see where it goes. THERE ARE NO RULES! It’s more fun that way because I get excited about the outcome as the maker and the observer. There’s also something to be said about the powerful sense of satisfaction when you start a project and finishing it. That’s a dragon worth chasing.
