“Why do I do my art? Vanity, I guess, right? I should probably admit that first. I’ve always wanted people to think of me as a creative person. That’s important to me, though embarrassing to admit. Even more embarrassing is the distasteful desire to cause jealousy in others. I try to change these parts of myself but they remain, well past the point that I should have outgrown them. So, there’s that.

But if you can forgive the vanity, there are also several honorable reasons why I write. I don’t know how not to write, for one. I’ve done it since I was a child, short picture books about monsters. I find it therapeutic. Small problems or personality flaws tend to fade once I’ve placed them into a story. I believe that happiness lies in working towards a difficult goal. This could apply to many things, but it’s certainly applicable to a novel or a writing career. And then there’s the magic: once there was nothing and now there is something. That is part of the human experience and it might be the part I like best. There are the characters I’ve created who, at night when my mind is racing, often climb into my bed with me and place their head over my chest and listen to my heart. So, there’s that, too.”
