Sevin Ceviker

Location: New York, NY

Occupation: Dancer

The signature line of Sevin’s email shares the Rumi quote, “Let the beauty of what you love, be what you do.” I had the privileged of meeting Sevin while attending college in NYC. She was and remains one of the most pleasant, open and kind hearted people I’ve met – oh, and she’s also a total badass. Whether watching a rehearsal before class or attending one of the various  performances throughout the year, Sevin’s dedication and grace were palpable. We all have our place here, we all have a reason why we choose to pursue what we do, and in watching Sevin perform, it’s abundantly clear where she belongs. She becomes bigger than the stage itself and does so in a way that invites the audience into her world, to be bigger than themselves. An audience doesn’t have to share opinions to share purpose – Sevin channels that purpose, blurring borders that otherwise keep us separate while wildly entertaining us in the process. As a self-designated speaker for your audience, Sevin, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

As long as I remember, I have always been too shy to interact with others. This includes family members as well. I had my own world in my own head, where as a young girl all I could remember was imagining myself on point and on stage. I remember begging my family to let me stay up later than usual so I could watch the ballet on TV on Tuesday nights. It was the most wonderful feeling, where I believed I danced with them in a world that felt so magical. Good thing a small dance school came to my neighborhood and my family decided to take me there so I could gain grace and learn how to move my tall, awkward and uncoordinated body.

Once I wore those pink tights and put my head in a bun, it was love at first sight. I knew I would always belong to this world. My first role as a dancer on stage was being a tree behind the branches and I was in heaven. After smelling the stage dust, as nervous as I was , I knew there was nothing else on this world that I would rather do. It was, it has, and it always will be dancing for me. When I dance I feel free, I feel who I am, I have no boundaries, and I can express all the feelings one might have. I still may not talk comfortably with others, but on stage I fly free. That is why I do my Art. It speaks, it acts, it lets me free, It DANCES.
