Douglas Alvarez

Douglas Alvarez

Location: Los Angeles
Occupation: Artist
Interviewed by: Baha Danesh

Douglas Alvarez’s conceptual paintings use vibrant compositions that frequently combine organic forms which emote ecstatic nostalgic feelings and eccentric humor. His experience within the city of Los Angeles is captured in each painting. Various dualities and contradictions play out including food and pain; abstraction and representation; geometry and biology, and nature and culture.

When we asked Alvarez why he chooses art he stated:

I’m not entirely certain if I choose or art chose me. I make art because I love creating and have little desire to engage in anything else. Well… besides traveling. My college experience was dedicated to pursuing a law degree. Once accepted into law school, I faced the proverbial crossroads and decided to disappoint everybody by following art. Just kidding. I HAD to choose art. It was the authentic thing to do.

Art impacts his life daily.

Alvarez explains:

Art is a refuge, a source for money, a spiritual exercise, and a connection. It impacts my life in every way and beyond. When I’m not creating in the studio, I’m relentlessly searching for inspiration. I walk this earth with an artist’s eye. Random patterns and compositions are everywhere waiting to be recognized. It makes little difference whether I’m in the center of an old growth forest or a downtown back alley. Something salient exists and I want to recognize it on a canvas or through sculpture.

This Saturday, July 11th, join Alvarez at bG Gallery located within Bergamot Station for the opening reception of “Pretty Pollution.” This exhibition features new work by Douglas Alvarez, Kimber Berry and a group of artists who find beauty in unexpected places.
